AMC has found their Lestat

It was announced last summer that AMC would be adapting Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire for the small screen and now we have our first casting announcement.

Sam Reid has been cast as Lestat de Lioncourt, the charming blonde vampire who thrills in his violent delights. As Variety notes, this is a potential big break for Sam Reid, as AMC has the rights to the full Vampire Chronicles and Lestat appears in several of them.

Lestat who has appeared on screen twice already. He was last played by Stuart Townsend in 2002’s dismal Queen of the Damned. Before that famously by Tom Cruise in the 1994 film adaptation of Interview with the Vampire. When Anne Rice learned of Cruise’s casting she was initially livid, not believing he could carry the part and a terrible crime in casting. However, after she finally got around to seeing the film (a producer sent her a VHS copy) she recounted her statements and wrote Cruise an apology letter. Rice hasn’t made any opposing comments about Reid so far, so he’s already has a leg up over Tom.

Sam Reid and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Belle

Sam Reid currently stars in The Newsreader an Australian drama series and has appeared in a few other television series. In the film world, he’s started in The Riot Club with Sam Claflin and Belle with Loki’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw which is currently streaming on Disney+.

Hopefully the next casting announcement will be for the woefully melancholic Louis. AMC’s Interview with the Vampire series will be an 8 episode series to start and is aiming for 2022 debut.
